The government is at work through the Italian ambassador to the Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to intensify the delivery of humanitarian aid to the civilian Palestinian population in Gaza, Foreign Minister and Deputy Premier Antonio Tajani said on Monday.
"Our ambassador to the FAO has begun contacting the representatives of the United Nations organisations present in Rome to better coordinate the aid that be delivered to the Palestinian population," said Tajani in Sarajevo.
The minister said the aid could be airdropped or delivered by truck via the Rafah border crossing with Egypt.
"But perhaps something more needs to be done, the slogan could be 'food for Gaza'," he continued.
Tajani said Italy is "working to coordinate and facilitate in the best possible way the delivery of aid to people suffering from the war" sparked by the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel and the Israeli response in Gaza. "I hope to be able to organise a first meeting in the coming days," he added.
Over 30,000 Palestinians are reported to have been killed in the Israeli military operation in Gaza according to Hamas sources.
The war has created a humanitarian crisis of massive proportions amid the collapse of the local healthcare system, difficulties in delivering aid and widespread internal displacement.
